Puppy puts icons for most common applications and tasks right on the desktop with a bright background. I'm used to near-empty screens with dull backgrounds. I say unusual, by Linux standards, because the desktop is half-full of icons. With that out of the way, I was given an unusual desktop. Puppy didn't do a very good job at guessing what my hardware was (both the recommendations for video and mouse were incorrect), but the hardware wizard explains what's going on and lets the user over-ride the defaults. Puppy booted off the CD and started a wizard to detect my hardware. This isn't an old machine it's a generic box running along at 2.5 GHz, but it's a bit short on memory for a modern desktop, with just 2 GB of RAM. With the latest version of Puppy downloaded, I decided to give it a test drive on my desktop machine.
